Top seven questions you should ask when choosing the right preschool for your child.

Posted 6 Aug 2019 02:00PM

Choosing a preschool that’s right for your child can be exciting and daunting. How do you make the best choice?

It’s a good idea to consider all of the everyday practical issues first:

  • Preschool hours – do they suit your family?
  • Closeness to your home and parking
  • Class size
  • Child and staff ratio
  • Preschool Fees
  • Are meals provided and are they nutritious?
  • School readiness program – is one offered?
  • Is enough time spent outside being physically active?
  • Outdoor area

Questions to ask:

  1. Preschool hours – do they suit your family?

When choosing your preschool, it’s obvious, but ensuring that it can meet your daily requirements of care is fundamental.

At Apples & Honey Preschool, we are open 50 weeks of the year, 8am – 6pm Monday to Thursday and 8am – 4pm on Fridays. We have the benefits of a community not-for-profit preschool with long day care operating hours.

  1. What is the educational philosophy of the school?

It's important to look for a discovery-based preschool program where children can make choices about their learning.

Consider the level of openness between the preschool and families – are families encouraged to stay a while? And, are they being given feedback on your child’s development and daily routine?

At Apples & Honey Preschool our philosophy revolves around the provision of a safe and nurturing, engaging and educational home-like environment. We work in partnership with families and the community and support each child’s individual interests, strengths and abilities.

  1. Fees

Can your family afford the preschool care that you’re seeking?

Apples & Honey Preschool offers affordable costs per day. Our full daily preschool fee is $126 per day Monday to Thursday and $105 on Fridays, due to a 4pm closure on Fridays. This daily fee includes morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. Childcare subsidy is available to qualifying parents.

Apples & Honey Preschool does not charge for public holidays.

  1. What is the education and experience of the staff?

You obviously want to be sure that your child’s preschool teacher is experienced and highly qualified.  Ask about their training and experience of working with young children and implementing the curriculum guided by the National Early Learning Years Framework.

It's not just about the curriculum either, it's also about the staff members and how committed, nurturing, and dedicated they are to the children and to the centre.

At Apples & Honey Preschool, we pride ourselves on our highly qualified and experienced caring staff. They are a team of certified early childhood educators and degree trained early childhood teachers, dedicated to providing children with the best start in life through loving care and learning development. They create meaningful play-based experiences for children that will challenge them and extend their learning.

  1. Are there chances for my child to develop gross and fine motor skills?

Physical activity is important for the development of your child’s gross motor skills and enhances their health and wellbeing overall. At Apples & Honey Preschool the following activities are offered to enhance your child’s gross motor skills: tennis, dance, yoga and general sport.

And, fine motor activities, such as cutting paper strips, scribbling in wet paint and stringing beads all assist in developing the hand skills that children will need when they start school.

At Apples & Honey Preschool, we offer a school readiness component that encompasses literacy, numeracy, science, art, music and language while also focusing on social and emotional development.

Through intentional learning and play, children are guided by their natural interests and curiosities, while being supported by educators who encourage children to make meaningful connections to the real world – not by learning through repetition and isolated recognition of numbers and letters. In this way, literacy and numeracy skills are integrated into daily experiences.

  1. What will my child’s day be like?

At Apples & Honey Preschool, your child’s day is structured around a combination of informal and formal (structured group time) experiences and interactions. We use both indoor and outdoor environments to provide opportunities for the children to play, learn and explore.

Daily experiences available include:

  • Sport - provided by Ready Steady Go Kids for an additional cost
  • Yoga and meditation
  • Music and dance
  • Daily cooking
  • Excursions and Incursions
  • Outdoor play
  • Puzzles / board games
  • Group time
  • Transition activities
  • Spontaneous learning activities

 7.  Are meals and snacks provided?

Are nutritious, well-balanced meals served at the preschools that you are considering? Are the snacks healthy?

Is there an expected pre-meal routine, such as going to the bathroom and washing hands? Will your child be required to use appropriate table manners?

At Apples & Honey Preschool, we provide a rotating nutritious meal plan, including pizza, white bean mornay, falafel, lentils and more. Morning tea and afternoon teas include wholegrains, dairy, fruit and raw vegetables.

Prior to and during meal times, children are encouraged to wash their hands, socialise and help clean up and scrape their plates.

Nutritious meals provided in 2019

Posted 17 Dec 2018 04:00PM

At the December board meeting it was decided that the preschool will be providing all meals from February 4 2019. This was a decision made after discussion with various potential and current parents about the time constraints we all face when it comes to preparing lunches for our children.

To conform to our kosher dietary requirements, the menu provided will be vegetarian with the occasional fish. There's a rotating 5 week nutritious meal plan, including pizza, white bean mornay, falafel, dal/lentils and more. Morning tea and afternoon tea will include wholegrain, dairy, fruit and raw vegetables - no more waking up at 6am to make lunchboxes!

Thanks all and have a happy holidays,
Tony
